Chengdu Diary

Each morning I pack the kids up in the car and head down my windy road out of the jungle and into town. NPR ‘s All Things Considered crackles through the dashboard as I bounce along. Most days I am cruising along listening with amusement or even concern but last week Melissa Block stopped me cold.

She reported from Dujiangyan of parents who searched amidst the post earthquake rubble for their toddler. You can listen to her report on NPR.org or you can read her account. Here’s a clip of what she wrote.

We found Fu Guanyu and her husband Wang Wei as they clung frantically to the long arm of a Hitachi excavator as it rumbled through the city of Dujiangyan. They were crying and seemed to be trying to pull the heavy machine, as if they could make it move faster toward their home. Their six-story apartment building had collapsed in the earthquake. Their toddler son, Wang Zhilu, was buried under the debris along with his grandparents. Mrs. Fu broke down as she told me she still had hope their son would be found alive. (Click here to read more of this story)

Check Out Chengdu Diary . It’s a peak into a very different world. May we never fail to remember what is most precious and important to us. Thank you Melissa Block for doing an exceptional job reporting.
