Snow Flower and the Secret Fan written by Lisa See is a must read for those who are interested in learning more of nineteenth century Chinese culture.
The account of footbindings were particularly fascinating as was the description of nu shu the unique language of the Chinese women that was created to communicate in secret.
But this book held more than that. Beyond the small details that told of a world different than mine there was the story of Lily and her laotong or “old same”, Snow Flower.
The story is Lily’s. And it’s fascinating.
I am still learning about love. I thought I understood it - not just mother love but the love for one’s parents, for one’s husband, and for one’s laotong. I’ve experienced the other types of love - pity love, respectful love, and gratitude love. But looking at our secret fan with it’s messages written between Snow Flower and me over many years, I see that I didn’t value the most important love - deep-heart love.
