The Healing Powers of Music

Posted by Dr. Cason on Friday, June 13th, 2008

Yesterday, as I was driving in my car I turned on the radio. I had just come off a busy clinic and needed to calm down. All morning long I moved fast, seeing this wheezing patient first- to get the neb treatment going and then jumping to the next room to exam the newborn and then coming back and evaluating a wound that’s been taking forever to heal. In addition to all of this I was catching up on phone calls, labs and prior charting and by the time I got in my car to drive home I was still breathing fast and looking for that next task to check off the to do list. Whew…

And then I heard a quiet melodious sonata coming from the radio. Ahhh….I took some deep breaths and settled in my seat. Tomorrow I’ll tell you what fascinating story followed the music. But for now enjoy the following selection: Mozart sonata in C K.545 2nd mov played by Mitsuko Uchida.

Don’t you feel good? Tell me all about it…

    Hi Dr. Cason,

    Beautiful!

Music can be a great way to change our mood. When I want to get the house cleaned real fast, I put on real peppy sing-a-long music. Before I know it, I’m done and in a great mood.

Wow! I was in a good mood today, but now I’m feeling even better.

Looking forward to your fascinating story tomorrow.

Do you know of any books on how music is used to heal?
