Have You Found Your Get Away Location?

Posted by Dr. Cason on Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Early Morning

Currently this is my special place.

Now that it is summer and Gabby-Girl is going to camp I’ve had to adjust my schedule a little. I now have to get up a little earlier to get the kids off to camp/daycare. I could wait till the last minute, get everybody off and then come sliding into work just in the nick of time. But I’ve learned not to do this. It makes me a very cranky frazzled person. I usually like to go and have some quiet time to read or write.

I always wanted to have just one special place. That one get away location that meant something to me, that was all mine. You know- like the old tree in the woods or the one flat rock next to the stream. It never happened. As I went along I realized that there was no perfect location, each spot was good for me at that particular time.

For years my perfect spot was the bathtub. I would sink in the bubbles and read. Now it’s my car. I cruise all over the island looking for places to write. I’ve been in front of empty warehouses, bookstores and a variety of ocean side spots. This current location is my favorite so far but then again I’ve only been here for two days. :)

Do you have a special location that you call your own? How often do you go there?

St. Louis is not known for its beautiful outdoor scenery, unfortunately. However, there is a place in the middle of the city that is my perfect escape. The Missouri Botanical Garden is where I go when I need outdoor beauty. I instantly relax and gain perspective again. When I lived in Colorado, it was the mountains. In CA, it was the ocean. Those places made me and my problems feel quite small. Sometimes that’s what you need to realize your problems really are small in the big picture.

My get away location is any place in green! Landscapes and country places are my favorites, I usually try to be in such places on a weekly basis as possible, that makes me start my week feeling fresh and full of energy.

I don’t have a get away location yet (haven’t found any give in my schedule). But how could you not be inspired by yours? Beautiful.

I had a place like that where I used to live. There was a lake in the center of town where swans, geese, and all manner of water fowl lived. I could go sit by that lake for hours. When I was going to college there, I would spend many a lunch hour sitting by that lake, eating a sandwich from the local sandwich shop, and reading the textbook for whatever class I had next.

I need to find a place like that in my new city! There’s gotta be one, there’s just gotta be…

Out in nature would fit that bill for me. When I had a job it was roaming the plants scouting for bugs. In our former home I was also energized and refreshed every time I hung out in the square of the old mexican village. Here, a long walk in the pasture or working in my garden always refresh me a bit.

Mutha Mae- Nature does have a way of calming us and showing us greatness huh? I’m partial to mountains having grown up in Northern California but the Ocean is really growing on especially since I started diving. It was that Sea Turtle, man! He was great!

AxeCity- It’s funny you say that I recently decided that my favorite color was green- for just that reason. Some how I always waffled thinking I wasn’t being fair to the other colors - like they cared!

Alesia- Try my bathtub idea. You need to shower or bathe at some time. right? Occasionally I’ll get up really early and take a bath when the kids are still sleeping. If I didn’t do that I’d might not get any me time in!

Guin- Seriously there’s got to be a new place for you. In DC it was the bookstore for me. I would hide in the stacks of books and linger over the fresh pages with the new type. I loved the way the hardbacks would crack a little when you pulled them open. :)

White Hot- I love to garden as well. Something about pulling off the dead little areas and clipping and trimming that’s so peaceful. I love to water the plants especially. I traipse out with flip flops and let the water trickle over my feet. My kids join me and when they aren’t screaming over who gets to hold the hose- they love it too.

Lisa- I’m starting to realize that my computer goes everywhere too! I need to start taking more walks. No way for me to drag it there!

Ranch Mommy- Whaaat? You got tons of little places don’t you? I’d love to trade places for a while!

    Hi Dr. Cason,

What a lovely getaway spot. I don’t have a favorite spot, but do like a place where I can see water and the mountains. The computer always gets left at home, as I don’t like taking work with me when I’m trying to become one with nature.

I love the long white beaches of Queensland. I try to go there once a year. It is my happy place.
Really though, anywhere that has water and somewhere I can walk along makes me feel really peaceful.

Barbara- That sounds nice. My favorite would be a lake by a mountain. I haven’t quite found that.

Tiff-You’re so lucky. Australia is sooooo beautiful. I have very good memories there.

I am fortunate to have moved to Paradise. Really. That’s the name of my new town…. I have a gorgeously placed deck and I can sit on it under the tall pines and oaks and watch the birds and listen to the wildlife. I am waiting for our spa to be put into working order for the ultimate star gazing.

I also find the Ocean very calming and tension relieving… although that usually involves a trip to the in-laws, so maybe that cancels stress relieving out??? :)

Thank you for sharing your place!
