Chop the Tension Away!
Posted by Dr. Cason on Thursday, July 10th, 2008
I love to cook. Something about the smell and the feel of the ingredients under my hands. As I chop away the tension also starts to flow. That is unless there are screaming kids under my feet. Then I’m yelling, HOT STOVE! EVERYBODY OUT!
But as they get older they join in with me and we have some fun. The littlest one likes to sit on the counter and give me a heart attack as he reaches for the knives!
They even like to cuddle and watch The Food Network. I’m not lying. They sit really still and watch as The Barefoot Contessa- Ina Garten chops and dices.
John always looks at me and says, This thrills you doesn’t it?
And I say, Yes sir it does!
What about everyone- Do you like to cook? Were you taught by someone or did you learn on your own?

Barbara Swaffordon 10 Jul 2008 at 4:39 pm 1Hi Dr. Cason,
I love to cook, and have since I helped my mother in the kitchen many years ago.
I also love the Food Network. Ina is a favorite as is Paula Dean. I laugh as I watch both of them. “…..add two pounds of butter, 3 cups of mayonnaise, etc…” Their recipes always look (and probably taste) good, but I would prefer a “lighter” version. (and it seems like they are incorporating more of those now).
To me, there’s nothing better than a home made meal. And…you always have to remember to add “love”.

Queen Mommyon 10 Jul 2008 at 5:09 pm 2I love to cook, don’t do it nearly as often as I like. And I worship Food Network! We all snuggle up to watch it too!

Dr. Casonon 10 Jul 2008 at 7:24 pm 3Barbara- I too used to love Paula Dean - but way too much butter now. i like Ina mostly for the way the food is presented. Simply gorgeous and all her recipes taste divine! I have all her cookbooks!
Queen Mommy- I knew Guam was going to be okay when I found The Food Network. I had come home!
Audubon Ronon 10 Jul 2008 at 11:32 pm 4I had wonderful Cajun cooks all around me growing up, mother, aunts grandma from Gumbo to pecan pie. My favortie is making a roux right at the point when the flour and oil turns oak brown and then adding the onions. The smell brings me back to childhood. I’d love to learn how to make Sushi. I love Sushi.

Alesiaon 11 Jul 2008 at 12:34 am 5I never learned to cook, or clean, for that matter. I’m almost completely lacking in the domestic arts. I love to read cookbooks though. I read them like novels.
Lanceon 11 Jul 2008 at 3:52 am 6I go in streaks cooking. I always find it more enjoyable when I have the time to do it. If it’s rushed cooking, then the fun is not there, and there is no tension being chopped away! Our two youngest kids are the cooks in the family. I remember when Cameron (now 9) was about two years old, and we woke up to find him downstairs cooking breakfast in the microwave (I don’t remember what anymore). And it turned out perfect! Since then he always wants to help in the kitchen, and go along to the grocery store (well, maybe part of that is for the free cookie he can get at the bakery!).

Ann at One Bag Nationon 11 Jul 2008 at 3:55 am 7I love to cook, and until recently was writing content for an online gourmet food retailer - a job I should have loved, but that’s another story . . .
My mother is a great cook, and the sort who rarely uses recipes. I’m getting there; most weeknight meals I throw together, but I love trying new recipes and aim to do that regularly.
So far, my daughter is not very interested, which does make me sad. She’d rather do her own “speriments” mixing and blending and generally just wasting perfectly good ingredients!

Dr. Casonon 11 Jul 2008 at 6:18 am 8Audubon- I love the smell of a good roux too! It’s my husband’s specialty and I have yet to really learn how to cook a good gumbo.
Alesia- I love to read cookbooks too! I have tons and am always looking for more.
Lance- How weird that must be to have the kids cooking. I can’t wait!
Ann- You didn’t like it huh? I always romanticized the idea of owning a restaurant until I waitressed for a while and realized how hard it really was. Plus as I said before- I’m not a night person. As I have gotten busier I use the recipes as a suggestion but there’s nothing better than finding a really good recipe and having it turn out just right!
Shannonon 11 Jul 2008 at 6:35 am 9I love watching the food network the only thing is it makes me hungry. It always makes me want something that I can not have. Like when they are doing a spot on a resturant in Georgia and I live in Utah but I really want to try the rib joint they are talking about. I ask my hubby if we can go to Georgia for lunch and then he looks at me like I have grown a third head or somthing. You’d think after 17 years he would be use to my random questions.

Dr. Casonon 11 Jul 2008 at 6:40 am 10Shannon- I love the travel ones too! Recently I have also really loved Tyler Florance! I started out with food 911 but now I like The Ultimate series. The only show I have never really cared for was How to Boil Water.
Utah must be beautiful! Thanks for visiting!
Lisaon 11 Jul 2008 at 10:30 am 11Cooking and I don’t mix, but I’ll bake anything. It’s the one thing my mom gave me that didn’t involve a guilt trip.
