Posted by Dr. Cason on Tuesday, July 15th, 2008
Day Number One-
3 specialists-Allergy/Gastroenterology/Pulmonology
7 hours in the hospital-08:00-15:00
4 tantrums and
1 skin testing
Take at look at the controls at the top row.
The positive is histamine and the negative is saline
The largest wheal is Egg (Bottom middle) The next is Milk (Top right) and the following…Peanut (Top right second one down below milk).
So now that we know that he’s allergic to, the question still is this contributing to his asthma flares? The work up continues.
A sweat test for Cystic Fibrosis tomorrow and an endoscopy and bronchoscopy the next day.
My father just pulled out two books from the nightstand.
The Holy Bible
The Teaching of Buddha
Looks like I may be doing some reading tonight.

What you must be going through. My heart hurts for you and Jake. I’m keeping you in my prayers.
Your father has the right idea with his choices of books.
Blessings, my friend!

Nikkion 15 Jul 2008 at 4:54 pm 3I think that I was probably about the same age when I had my allergy testing done because I kept having to be rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night due to asthma attacks. Although I remember the experience I don’t remember it being all that horrible. The part I remember most is that the Doctor gave me a red sucker while I was waiting! I was sooo excited because the red ones were my favorite! I’m sure that Jake will take the good memories away with him as well!
Give Jake a sucker for me!
Cath Lawsonon 15 Jul 2008 at 7:32 pm 4Hi Dr Cason - that looks nasty. It seems like he has a serious allergy to egg.
I’ll be interested to hear the results and I hope you get to the bottom of it. My son also suffers from asthma and we’re still trying to work out what causes it to flare up, aside from going near cats and dogs etc.
Bethon 15 Jul 2008 at 8:19 pm 5Those are some impressive welts! I’m guessing the answer to this is yes, but has he been tested for celiac disease? I’ll be thinking good thoughts for you as the testing progresses.

Dawnon 16 Jul 2008 at 2:01 am 6Oh my goodness! Those are some big welts. The poor little guy
I am also allergic to eggs, as well as soy. My mom immediately took me grocery shopping after the allergy testing to look for foods without those ingredients. Hard to find - but it made such a difference. Changing my diet worked better than anything else - I felt like I was immune to allergy medicine. Once you identify it, at least you can deal with the problem, and move on! Good luck with the remainder of the tests.
Dr. Casonon 16 Jul 2008 at 2:48 am 7Jeni- Your site looks great! I can’t wait to see how you tinker with it. Watch out it gets addicting! Look at Barbara Swafford’s site http://bloggingwithoutablog.com/ and John Hoff’s site at http://eventurebiz.com/blog/ They have great resources for the newbie as well as the experienced blogger. We can always learn more!
Barbara- I didn’t get to the books. By the time evening hit I turned on the TV and ordered Juno. Liked it!
Nikki- Thanks for the positive vibe. Jakey was soon distracted with some toys, but he kept saying, Heyyyyyy! She pokey my back!
Cath- Yes the egg is significant. Even the allergist- after my long and involved story said-I don’t think it’s egg. Then he did the testing. Hmmm, he said, Seems he’s allergic to eggs! Um, Yes! That’s what I’ve been saying!
BTW- As a pediatrician I’ve seen some bad allergies to dustmites and coakroaches! As he been tested?
Beth- Thanks for commenting! He’s going to get some labs tomorrow. Celiac is one of them. I’m not sure if that’s what he has seems pretty rare. You know what they say- If a medical student hears hoofs outside the window he/she thinks of a zebra when it’s probably just a plan old horse! But now that were finding out more about Celiac it turns out it may be more of a horse and less a zebra!
Dawn- Are you still allergic or did you outgrow it? And can you have a little mixed in foods now. At dinner we happened to be stationed next to the dessert tray. Ugh!!!!
Erinon 16 Jul 2008 at 4:09 am 8Yeow! That egg wheal makes me want to scratch! Poor kiddo.
I hope you continue to get your answers. And find good egg-free foods for him to eat.

Dr. Casonon 16 Jul 2008 at 6:30 pm 11Erin- I find a lot of egg free foods but everywhere I turn around it seems that an egg tries to create a little trouble! This A.M. I was getting Jake a spoon and there dropped on the top of the spoons was a little egg that escaped someone’s plate! Aghhh!! I had to dig to the bottom so he wouldn’t get cross contaminated!
Awesome Mom- Yes. I’m happy to know. Ignorance isn’t bliss…it’s torture!
Tiff- I really had hoped that I was just a crazy overacting mom.
Guinevere Meadowon 17 Jul 2008 at 6:57 am 12Oh my goodness! the poor thing!! I remember having similar allergy tests when I was young, but they were on my arm. I just remember how itchy it was!! No fun at all.

Dawnon 17 Jul 2008 at 7:19 am 13I think I may have outgrown it - it mostly just gives me congestion/stuff nose now, much like a cold. I take Claritin everyday, and they just prescribed me Singulair (even though I don’t have asthma). I gave up not eating eggs/soy after so many years of trying to watch every little thing I ate! Have you logged on to the Food Allergy Network website? I’m sure you have, but if not, it’s very helpful….
Dr. Casonon 17 Jul 2008 at 5:24 pm 14Guinevere Meadow- Seems I have been running into a lot of people who have had allergies. Not so uncommon.
Dawn- Singulair is now marketed for allergies. It seems to do really well for some people. Yes I have frequented the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network website, they have a great food allergy action plan.
Nora Beeon 18 Jul 2008 at 2:32 pm 15Oh, my heart is with you all. Just caught up with the last few posts. Glad you are in a beautiful place while you wait for all these results…

Sara Rosson 22 Jul 2008 at 12:13 pm 16Hi Dr Cason-
Sorry I haven’t written in a while. It has been a bit crazy around our house as well. My 14 month old has the same food allergies as Jake! It is amazing how common these 3 seem to be. Here milk allergy is very severe and it seems to always try to creep into her life too. Whenever we are out at a restaurant and my 3.5 year old orders milk, the wait staff always tries to give it to my daughter or even worse spills it on her! She breaks out on contact! Sounds like Jake’s reaction to egg. Lily has never had an egg or nuts, so I don’t know the true severity, only that the nurse that did our scratch test, said “Oh my god!” to the wealts on her back. Nice!
And, get this. There are hidden allergens in so many things. We just found out that Lily can’t eat non organic or hormone injected beef because she has an allergic reaction! Amazing. It was try by error as I found her breaking out in a rash to a food that she has eaten before. We couldn’t figure out what was going on. We kept thinking we cross contaminated. Then she ate the steak tips in isolation, and we figured it out.
I hope you get to the bottom of this and his reactions are just food allergy related. We have only been dealing with this for 3 months. It is hard, but it gets more managable every day.

Sara Rosson 22 Jul 2008 at 12:23 pm 17Sheila-
One other thing, be careful of Singulair if you end up giving it to Jake. I know several children between ages of 2-5 that have taken it for environmental allergies and asthma and have had severe nightmares while taking it.
After the Singulair was stopped, the nightmares went away.

Dr. Casonon 23 Jul 2008 at 7:08 pm 18Nora- Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for the kind thoughts!
Sara- Hi there! Glad to hear you guys are doing okay. Wow- food allergies. What a nightmare huh? The worst part is explaining to people and then they look at you and think you are a hypochondriac! A few days ago I went to lunch and was trying to figure something out for Jake and the server was very unhelpful. He kept coming back to see if we were ready and finally I got a little stressed and snapped, No I can’t take care of myself until I figure out what my son can eat.” He just turned and walked away so I called to him, No wait. Come back you need to help me! He still was clueless! Aaaagh!!
And about the nightmares. Interesting. I have never heard of that.
I hope that Lily is doing okay now. Let me know if I can answer any questions for you!
