A Little Sweat and Relaxation
Posted by Dr. Cason on Wednesday, July 16th, 2008
Another busy day at Tripler Medical Center ruling out Cystic Fibrosis with a sweat test.
Here we are as the electrodes are attached to Jake’s arm to stimulate his sweat glands.
It worked.
Look how much was collected! It was packaged off to the lab for the results, while we went off and explored O’ahu.

Such delicate fluffy petals on the tree. I gave one to Jakey and he held it for quite a while before finally letting it go.
The shore was peaceful as the rain fell to the ocean.
Now this last pic is my favorite. I named it Tangled Beauty. It seemed apropos.
The scopes have now been put off until Thursday, so tomorrow will be a bit of a break.Good thing since my little guy’s patience is wearing thin. We were coming up to an innocent looking building today and he asked if it was the hospital.

I love the photographs you’re sharing. The last one is very unique. I can see why you like it. I also like the one the the beautiful flowers/petals.
It’s sounding like you’re another step closer to an answer. Hopefully a day off will be just what Jake needs. (and you too).

AxeCityon 17 Jul 2008 at 5:26 am 4The last photo is amazing!
The photos taken at the medical center were so interesting and illustrative too, I didn’t know that sweat can be diagnosed, what results does the sample should show?
Queen Mommyon 17 Jul 2008 at 6:51 am 5Glad progress is being made, even in the form of sweat!
Hope you had a peaceful day off today.

Linda Abbiton 17 Jul 2008 at 1:53 pm 9Dear Dr. Cason,
Just caught up with your journey. Thanks for sharing your photos with us. Modern medicine is truly incredible!
I feel for you. We found out my son had food allergies at 18 months. He’s outgrown all but the peanut products, which was so far off the scale that the MD told us he’d never outgrow it. He is now 18-1/2 yo and we’ve only had to use an EpiPen twice in all of these years, thank God!
Please try to relax and enjoy the beauty of Hawaii on your day off. I think it is one of the prettiest places on the planet.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Casonon 17 Jul 2008 at 5:35 pm 10AxeCity- Cystic Fibrosis is a disorder of the Sodium Chloride channels therefore one could collect sweat and analyze the Sodium and Chloride in the sample and rule in or out Cystic fibrosis. This link does a good job explaining it. http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/sweat_chloride/glance.html
Queen- Little by little we are getting there!
Guinevere- Thanks for the compliment. It’s fun to see what you can get!
Lance- Thanks. We just got back. He’s a little wiped out.
Davina- Thanks for the encouragement!
Linda- Thanks for the story of your son. I’m scared to use the epi pen but I carry it around everywhere! What happened? Was something mixed in that he didn’t know or did he just try something out? I know sometimes teenagers do some risky behavior.
Cath Lawsonon 17 Jul 2008 at 6:22 pm 11Hi Dr Cason - The poor little guy is probably sick of the sight of hospitals. At least you’ve ruled out Cystic Fibrosis, which must have been a relief. I hope you get to the root of the problem soon.
