A Doctor’s Life - It’s Not Just About Medicine

Aerial Roots

Posted by Dr. Cason on Monday, July 21st, 2008

Hi everyone! Today was another lovely day meandering around the island. Here is just one of the photos I promised. Jake with the birds didn’t quite turn out the way I wanted and I spent too long tinkering in Photoshop without a decent results! Shoot!!

But this one I really liked and again I changed it to black and white because the color wasn’t significant. It was really about light and dark and the comparison of his little size with the enormity of the tree. Just lovely!

Tomorrow we go back in for the other labs. Was it a fluke or not? We’ll see…

Aerial Roots

Everywhere you go in O’ahu these magnificent trees with their aerial roots amaze you. As you can see Jakey was pretty impressed as well. Just as he was leaving the tree a huge rat scuttled around the backside. Ewww!

Hi Dr Cason - Another great pic. Do you mean that you take them in colour and change them to black and white in photoshop? It is easy to do? I’m a real photoshop novice. Good luck tomorrow.

My kids loved the Banyan trees on Maui. I can’t help thinking they way they form new roots from the branches are a metaphor for some things….
Earlier you mentioned backing up your website. I didn’t now you could do that. How do you do that? And how do you like it now that you’re off of blogger?

    Gorgeous.

I’m waiting anxiously with you. In October we were told my daughter had dopa-responsive dystonia…then we went in for a confirmation LP and turns out, they were wrong. It was such a heart-wrenching experience and we still know so little.

    Hi Dr Cason,

I just read what you posted on Barbara’s post about wanting to become a photojournalist. Well, I like your pictures, and like you said, you ARE one!

I like this photo of Jakey and the banyon tree.

Have a great meander on the islands!

Donna- Hugs back at you! :)

Cath- Yes with a digital camera you take the photo and then convert the data in Adobe Photoshop. There is so much you can do! The possibilities are endless.

Lisa- “Blue Host” hosts my site and I can download a backup from them. Yes I like having my own site though it is more time consuming initially I find myself now on cruise control. I liked blogger in the beginning but I found myself wanting to change my layout too much and when my site grows I want the options to grow with it!

Kyla- Drew the labs today so we’re getting closer to an answer. Does your daughter still have dystonia?

Ellen- Hi! I’d like to think so! :)

Sheila - Linda shared this website with me. I am so enjoying your beautiful stories and photographs. I too love Photoshop. Having been a graphic artist before becoming a database and systems person for computers, my love still lies with graphic arts. The endless things which can be done with Photoshop are amazing. Be sure and check out some of the online seminars offered by Adobe (I believe these are also free) for Photoshop, and many of the other wonderful products from Adobe.

With your medical background, I wanted to mention an organization you might like to join and become involved with. Many of the photographers I worked with at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital have their Biomedical Photography certifications, and attend the meetings. Yes, there is beauty in the world around us, but there is also much beauty in the miracle of the human body as God’s marvelous creation.

I am praying very much for Jakey. I know you must be very worried and concerned, but please prayer and place these worries in God’s hands - he will not fail you. Your family is every bit as beautiful as your photography. Definitely follow this gift - it is definitely a God-given talent.

    Hi Dr. Cason,

I love how you captured the contrast in the size of things. Great work! I’m looking forward to seeing more pictures from Hawaii.

    Crossing fingers for Jakey.

Kat- Thank you for visiting me and the kind words. I’m still so green with photography and at times want to run back to my safe world of practicing medicine but I remind myself that it’s just about having fun and capturing beauty. I have never heard of biomedical photography but I am intrigued. I’ll have to check it out! Thank you for the info!

Barbara- Really good series you have going on at your site right now! I can’t even begin to tell you how HUGE the tree looked even more so than was depicted in the photo!

    Beth- We’ll know more tomorrow.

She only experienced cervical dystonia and it was limited to her neurological episodes, but that is what the first LP showed, so they ran with it. Unfortunately her CSF had been in storage for a week or two before they ordered the test and gave false results. (Her pediatrician and I had our doubts from the beginning, because KayTar presents as largely ataxic which is not indicative of DRD, but it was still disappointing to have our hopes up and then dashed.)

Sheila - It is me again.

I don’t know why I did not include these links for you before. I think you will enjoy the links and meetings for the association. Here is their website I found:

    http://www.bca.org/grants/pjsaines.html

Also, I searched and found this Adobe seminar series online currently. Just search “Adobe AND Photoshop Online Seminars” to find these periodically going on.

Have fun, I’m back to Dreamweaver tonight with more website work.

Kyla- Oh man. My heart goes out to you.

Kat- Oh thank you again! Dreamweaver is with Adobe right. In CS3? I thought about that but went with Wordpress.org. So far I have been very happy! Do you have your own site. I don’t see a link with your name!
