7 Stitches
Posted by Dr. Cason on Tuesday, August 5th, 2008
We postpone our regularly scheduled recipe for a little piece of daily drama.
7 stitches. That’s how many it took. You can see only six. That’s because there’s one that is buried.
I missed the whole thing.
“Uh huh- And how long has this cough been going on?” Is what I said and what I meant was “Hurry Hurry Hurry! My son is bleeding and I know he has his daddy and a whole team of very competent doctors but what he really needs is his mommy!”
I finished my exam in record time- I’m so sorry ma’am. I waited- impatiently tapping my foot and pacing -for those last two shots to be given and I BOLTED! True to form everything was slow on the way there. The street was partially flooded from the recent onslaught of rain. We all tucked in one lane and when it was clear we dispersed, scattering like ants. I scurried to the side and drove extra careful but a little fast until I hit the detour. The came to ANOTHER halt. And waited and rushed following it. Then boom right behind three cars going 15 miles an hour.
“COME ON!” I yelled.
They parted and I made it to the ER. Flying around the corner I came to his room and this is what I saw:
“Oh! My poor baby! Are you okay?” I leaned in and kissed him – I was really trying to take a better look:
My stinker took a papoose and two people to pin him down. And the screams were loud!! – so I was told. He seemed to be especially fond of the Popsicle and glove balloon though.
But he remained a little gun shy:
Relax Baby it’s only a band aid!
If it’s not one drama it’s another. I am really not a drama queen. Swear! It’s all him.Yep – he’s going to give me a heart attack.

Kathleenon 05 Aug 2008 at 1:23 am 1Man Jakey, what a whooper that is! I would be crying too…. Hope it feels better with that balloon and popsicle, and gets well soon. Just think what a great scar you will have to show to all those beautiful women in your life one day!
My grandmother used to say, “We don’t raise them, God does.” So true. We cannot keep up with their fast pace, so one depends on God to do this for us.
Lisaon 05 Aug 2008 at 1:29 am 2Ouch!!! I’m such a big baby when it comes to my kids! The nurse in me takes a vacation.

Kylaon 05 Aug 2008 at 2:07 am 3Oh wow! BubTar only needed 2, although I think 3 might have done a bit better in regards to the scarring.
Do they use EMLA cream there? It has been a lifesaver for us.

Erinon 05 Aug 2008 at 4:52 am 6Oh! Poor buddy!
That’s one milestone we haven’t had (yet). And oh, how I hope it never comes…
Glad the popsicle (wow – that really doesn’t look right) and glove balloon helped make him feel better.

chrison 05 Aug 2008 at 5:04 am 7I’m sure he’ll come up with some fantastic stories to tell his buddies where, why, and how he got the scar. Ouch!
Sarah R.on 05 Aug 2008 at 5:44 am 8You didn’t tell us, how did it happen?
Alesiaon 05 Aug 2008 at 6:19 am 9Oh, baby.
My favorite singer, Jane Siberry, has a song called “Hockey”, and seeing Jakey’s picture here made me think of these lines:
“He’ll have that scar on his chin forever.
Someday his girlfriend will say, ‘Hey, where..?’
He might look out the window. Or not.”
tiffon 05 Aug 2008 at 9:04 am 10Wow, that looks very impressive.
That will live a Harry Potteresque scar.
All the gilrs will swoon.
tiffon 05 Aug 2008 at 9:05 am 11pffft. I meant leave.

Sara Rosson 05 Aug 2008 at 11:17 am 13Wow- that is a whopper. Glad to see he is in good spirits. I could just imagine what he was like right after it happened.
I was thinking Harry Potter scar too, and, how did it happen?
Housecaton 05 Aug 2008 at 11:33 am 14You’re lucky you missed it! It’s terrible to hear them cry for you and there’s nothing you can do about it because they NEED those stitches! Did your husband give him the stitches?

Dr. Casonon 05 Aug 2008 at 3:18 pm 15Kathleen- Well I’m glad God is there because I’m thinking I need a little help!
Lisa- I’m a cry baby too. I get big fat tears in my eyes and then my husband looks at me and says, ‘Could you be a little strong please?”
Kyla- Yes they used EMLA. So I was told.
Moon- I waiting for him to forget but not yet. Last night he even said, “Get off my bed Mommy. Go away. Don’t kiss my owie” Broke my heart but I was hovering a lot and trying to put more Neosporin on it. I think he’d had enough!
Audubon- Nothing much fazes me with my patients. But my kids? I feel faint too!
Awesome- Oh I pray they will stay safe! Boys have the worst accident rates! They are just so impulsive and brave!
Erin- He loved the Popsicle and I’m glad something calmed him down!
Chris- I can only hope and dream.
Sarah- Oh! He was wearing his new Spiderman shoes and after running along speedily, tripped and fell into the Lego table. All my fault really.
Alesia- Jane Siberry- I’ll have to check her out!
tiff- I would have probably fixed it but now that you left the cute messages fixing it yourself I can’t touch it. I love the pffft. I’m always trying to figure out ways to spell sound effects!
Sara- Years to come we’ll sit and watch Harry Potter and I’ll tell what everyone said.
Housecat- No an ER doc did but they offered for him to do it. “WHAT!!!” I yelled, “Are you crazy?” I would only sew up my own kid if we were in the woods or had no- one experienced to do it! I can just imagine him yelling at us years later for the botched job! (or imagined botched job. You know kids- they are so dramatic!)
Ambreon 05 Aug 2008 at 3:21 pm 16Oh, what a sweetie! We went through a similar injury with Haley and it was no fun! Hug him for me will ya?

Barbara Swaffordon 05 Aug 2008 at 4:19 pm 18Hi Dr. Cason,
Poor little Jakey! He sure has been through a lot lately, hasn’t he? It looks like he took it like a good little trooper. Hopefully the scar will fade.
Kathleenon 06 Aug 2008 at 5:25 am 19Hey Sheila and Moonbeam – Now that you mention it, don’t you think that stitching on his forehead looks a bit like a spiderman’s spiderweb. Maybe you need to get him some spiderman band aids for his spiderweb Sheila!
Kathleenon 06 Aug 2008 at 6:50 am 20Sheila – I was reading your nice info about the desire to help with humanitarian missions. I thought you might want to add this website to your blog. By clicking on these tabs at the top each day, these organizations will donate to such great causes as Hunger, Breast Cancer, Child Health, Literacy, Rainforest and Animal Rescue.
I have this marked in my favorites as “Click on this Site Each Day” to remind me to do this. I do not receive a bunch of junk mail either from this, I promise. It costs nothing, but helps so many. Thanks.

White Hot Magikon 07 Aug 2008 at 3:16 am 21OHHH!
Luckily my kids haven’t had to have stitches, yet.. watch today be the day. I did have to help hold my son down to get an IV in him and quite frankly it sucked big time.
