A Doctor’s Life - It’s Not Just About Medicine

Some More Black and Whites

Posted by Dr. Cason on Friday, August 8th, 2008

When I was young I pulled  an old Ansel Adams calendar to pieces and tacked them up all around the wall. The striking images soothed me. Ansel was once quoted as saying it didn’t so much matter what you thought when you saw a photo but what you felt.

This is what I feel:

Lonely Horse Black and White

Lonely. This is from an old park by my work and it’s always empty. I can almost hear the children voices fading away in the distance.

Towering Refuge in Black and White

Intimidated. This is a building on the base just around the corner from where I drop my daughter each day. Every day I go by it I am amazed at how big it seems. A few days ago I sloshed through the wet grass to get a better view. I clicked away and then hurried and got out of there. I hate to make trouble and wanted to leave quickly before anyone asked me any questions. (Dad- does that sound familiar?)

Butterfly Feeder in Black and White

Happy.  This is a butterfly feeder we found in the butterfly sanctuary in Australia. There couldn’t be a sweeter place.

Sail Boats B and W

Quiet and contemplative. This was in Port Douglas, Australia. We sat there at the pier resting while the kids ran around burning off some energy before we all climbed back in the bus back to Cairns.

Tooth Fairy Black and White

Nostalgic. When my oldest lost her first tooth, the tooth fairy came to visit. She left a nice little gift and tied it with a sweet bow to the doorknob. My oldest insisted that she put it under the pillow but I told her that she needed to use the doorknob!

Okay now it’s your turn…please tell me what you feel when looking at the photos. I’m looking for lots of audience participation on this one!!

The first picture strikes me the most. I almost feel this little worn creature is crying “clean me, paint me, fix me up, I want the children back. I am lonely without them.”

I remember one of my artist friends in Memphis telling me the best job she ever had was one summer. She worked that summer helping to repaint all the horses and carousel at the Memphis Fairgrounds. Little did I know when my children and I rode those horses, chances were my friend Linda had given them new life.

I think this little creature wants the same new life! Sheila maybe you should spearhead the restoration of this little playground for the children.

The first one I saw as nostalgic, not necessarily sad (Not until I read the story) but I do like the idea of painting them - might be a fun neighborhood project.

The second one - that building looks giant - and a bit scary.

Third - Looks like a childs vase filled with fun finds form the yard.

Fourth - Calm - however I don’t like being on boats, so it is just calm to see them :) Not to be on them lol

Last - The only thing that came to mind was - $5 for a tooth!! Sheesh, I only got a quarter. LOL The ribbon/door idea is quite lovely. It looks beautiful.

    Have a great day!

Moon- Yes I feel the loneliness as well. Without the color we don’t get distracted by all the other qualities. We just see the form and feel.

Kathleen- I never thought about it. I guess I can call the parks department and see who oversees it!

Kristin- Inflation. I’m sorry to say that $5 might be tough to find something but I found it doesn’t really matter. No kidding they are all under her bed in a little baggy waiting to be spent. I have no real rules about what she buys as long as it isn’t candy!

I think you expressed the emotions perfectly. Although, the last one for me would probably be whismy, just because I don’t have the memories of it to cause nostalgia.

I’ve always LOVE B&W pictures…I did the same with an Ansel Adams calandar in college…I think I still have one of teh pictures somewhere.

The feeling I get with all of those pictures is nostagia…all except the butterfly feeder…that one seemed sad for some reason, before I knew what it was.

Oh, and $5? now you make me feel like a real skinflint! My 6 year old just got 50 cents for her last tooth!

Okay everyone, the big mouth Memphis woman has to relay a funny story about the tooth fairy picture. I think this is a delightful idea BTW. So pretty, just like a little girl, and shows Mom Sheila creativity too!

My story is about the tooth fairy. My same friend I mentioned above, Linda the artist in Memphis, told me this story. Her son, who is now quite the executive, asked his mother to mail a package for him to his cousin in New York. Mom Linda asked what was in the package and John replied, “Not much, just a tooth.” It seems his cousin in New York had told John how much the tooth fairy left for his teeth, and John decided to send his tooth to New York where the “going market for missing teeth” was much higher than the Memphis tooth fairy.

This same son also “charged” his brother for taking him everywhere after his brother temporarily lost his license for a while from a DUI. Quite the little entrepreneur it seemed - and he still is.

….you didn’t want “to make trouble and” …..

    - well…., y’all know about those leopards and their spots….

    - often, consistency is a good thing. recognizable and true. would we all remain true to ourselves.

These black and white images have a nostalgic and melancholy feel about them. Your photos on this blog are so expressive - you have exceptional talent with the camera.

I am going to go backwards (I always have been a bit different!)

Fifth - A nice touch. It also reminded me of what we did when I was a child. When we lost a tooth it was left overnight for the tooth fairy on top of the fridge inside an upside down glass.

Fourth – Ahhh the sea…relaxing, calming and rejuvenating.

Third – Carefree and light just like a butterfly.

Second – An empty shell – gloomy.

First - It gives the sense of abandonment and yet promise.

    Hi Dr. Cason,

    1) Make me think “sad” - the way the horse (?) has its head positioned
    2) Magnificent - I love the starburst of the sun
    3) Reminds me of the desert - the leaves look like they’re needing water or nourishment
    4) Safe and Sleepy - all the boats are in for the night
    5) Out of place - the money and the delicate ribbon don’t go together.

One: Jan Camp (the artist / photographer. Google Jan Camp and see what I mean).
Two: The ravages of war. (An odd building to begin with)
Three: I forgot to water the plants again
    Four: Something Dutch
Five: No feeling on that one.
