Introducing Laura Roppe

Have you ever thought you were witnessing the beginning of something big?
I feel this now.
My friend Laura Roppe is living her dream and this week that dream took another step forward!
I remember meeting Laura a few years ago when we all huddled around a couch and listened to her speak of finishing a marathon. I’m always in awe of people who work out regularly and well finishing a marathon is about as hard as it gets!
“You know what the best part was?” She said, “The realization that I could do anything!”
Because of that one single experience she was brave enough to join a band and start singing. Gradually she has got out into the community and played around the San Diego area. She’s just recently made a CD but it was only when she stood in a Vons grocery store parking lot recently and took that leap did her dreams really take off.
The producer of a radio program, Jeff and Jer showgram, Little Tommy was sitting in his car. Laura walked over, knocked on his window and made her pitch. He was impressed. You can hear the whole story and listen to her reaction to her music being played on the air for the first time at The Jeff and Jer Showgram
Watch out you just might cry!
You can also listen to Laura’s music on her web site www.lauraroppe.com
In the upper right hand corner are her songs. Be sure to take the time to listen and feel the words. She’s a powerful songwriter! My personal favorites are Little Daughter and Float Away. Here are the lyrics to Float Away. I listened to it 20 times to get all the words down and sobbed. I’m always startled when music can touch that part inside.
Here’s to you Laura. I am releasing you to my blogger world. I wish you the greatest success! You are an inspiration and I am proud to call you my friend.
Sheila
Float Away:
She says I think I’ll go home, turn off the telephone
Take a little pill to cope and float away
Forget about the day
She keeps telling herself she’s doing just fine
If she lights a candle, drinks a glass of wine
She can float
Float away
She’s not sure how she got to this place
The world is crashing down
All mixed up, letting go, giving up
Never thought she’d end up
Getting wasted
Losing faith
Floating away
She says this life’s too heavy
I’ve reached a breaking point
If check out now, I can leave it all behind
And float
Float away
But she hears the voice of her little girl
Only thing that matters in this whole world
Gotta find a way
Not to fade away
She’s not sure how she got to this place
The world is crashing down
All mixed up, letting go, giving up
Never thought she’d end up
Getting wasted
Losing faith
Floating away
Hold on for one more day
Hold on for one more day
Hold on for one more day
Hold on for one more day
Hold on for one more day
Hold on for one more day
She’s not sure how she got to this place
The world is crashing down
Got to have faith it’ll be alright
Too much to lose if she loses this fight
Baby gowing up ashamed of her life
If she goes away
If she fades away
Won’t float away
No
Won’t float away
Hold on for one more day
Hold on for one more day
Hold on for one more day
Have you taken that step toward realizing your dream? Have you knocked on a few windows in a Vons parking lot?

Kathleenon 09 Aug 2008 at 2:06 am 1What music with such deep meaning and thought! This really touched me Sheila. It is so easy with the severe pain I suffer from my rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and osteoporesis to just sometimes think life is easier just taking the pain medication and sleeping where I am not in pain. I have to fight this solution all the time. Moonbeam’s Mom helps me with this a lot. She calls me on the weekend and I feel ashamed I am still in the bed (hee, hee).
But then I think of the time I will be missing from the love of my children, animals, and friends, and I get up, try to lead a somewhat normal life, and move forward in pain. The doctor says this is the only thing that keeps someone with severe arthritis from becoming truly crippled and in a wheelchair - MOVE.
Everyone should reach for their dreams. I look back now and wish I had taken that ride on a sailboat I wanted to take and learned to sail, wish I had gone down that river in a kayake, swam with those dolphins, and many other things that are now past my health ability. So everyone reach for those dreams before they pass you by - life is precious!
Audubon Ronon 09 Aug 2008 at 6:12 am 2No, but I did push a cart into a brand Cadillac Escalade in the Winn Dixie parking lot recently. It was an accident.
I had my 15 minutes of fame. I danced at Lincoln Center with Amercian Ballet Theater for two years. I also fashioned a mens line for Oscar de la Renta in the 70’s, recorded music in a studio, wrote songs, still do and the most important thing of it all, I had no talent, a decent work ethic maybe, but I had to learn as I got older to find a way to stay humble before God finds one. When God gets you, look out.
Kathleenon 09 Aug 2008 at 7:13 am 3Moonbeam’s Mom - I told you God is going to reward you in Heaven for helping all those lost little creatures. I sure hope I am already up there so I can have a sideline view and sit laughing at the stampede!
Kylaon 09 Aug 2008 at 7:25 am 4Wow, what a song. And what a story! How amazing!

Dr. Casonon 09 Aug 2008 at 9:22 am 5Moon- I like the countryness of it too! And about the fame. It’s really about realizing your dream whatever that may be. Singer/songwriter or rescuer of lost dogs. It’s what makes you feel good at night-how you touched the world and made it a little better. And you do that.
Kathleen- I hope that some of those things may still be possible. YOu may have to adjust the dreams to your current condition but maybe you needn’t give them up entirely. Perhaps you could sit with the dolphins.
Audubon- You do have talent. It just might not be what you had originally expected it to be. I think we go through life trying this and that and slowly correcting our course until it’s aligned with what makes us feel whole. I love your writing and look forward to what you have to say!
Kyla- I know huh?
Laura Roppeon 09 Aug 2008 at 5:33 pm 6Thank you, Sheila (Dr. Cason) for this incredible blog. I am so excited to introduce my music to your community — but more importantly, I am really happy to have the opportunity to maybe in a small way spark a dialogue about dreaming big, following your heart, and finding ways to connect on a meaningful level, whatever that may be. You are certainly doing that, Sheila (Dr. Cason). I am proud of how your blog reaches out in such a caring and honest way, and I hope my music can in some small way do the same thing. Thank you for taking the time to blog about me. I am so touched, and grateful. Laura
Linda Abbiton 09 Aug 2008 at 5:36 pm 7I really like Float Away, too! Beautiful melody.
So nice of you to promote your friend’s success this way. I wish her all the best with her music! She is a great example about going after your dreams in every way you can! /////Standing ovation for Laura!\\\\\
Dr. Casonon 09 Aug 2008 at 7:41 pm 8Laura- Yeah!! I played you for my staff as well. They were like, “No Way!!” And of course I was like, “Yes Way!!”
It’s like you said, If you don’t A-S-K you don’t G-E-T! I forgot to say I loved the video on You tUbe Little Daughter, particularly the part when you skipped the stone and threw your hands up in the air! I laughed and thought , “Yeah that’s Laura! Enjoying the little things!”
Linda- I don’t think we do enough to tell the people we care about just how much they mean to us. I’m always forgetting!
Andi Tanneron 14 Aug 2008 at 1:16 pm 9Laura is headed for greatness!! Our meeting was an interesting story, one I’ll be telling everyone when she’s accepting her Grammy!!

Leanne Magraithon 15 Aug 2008 at 11:32 am 10I love the music - Laura sure is talented! I hope she catches on in Australia.
The overall message about following your dreams and passion is something that resonates with me, and it is fantastic to see an example of someone who is out there doing it!
