What is the deal?

Posted by Dr. Cason on Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Ok seriously what is the deal?

How do you all visit and comment?

I just spent two hours and didn’t even come close to visiting everyone. Do you all tuck away some special time? Do you visit just a few each day and hope to get everyone?

Do you just give up? Do you feel bad when you can’t get back to people who take their hard earned time and love and visit you? Do you get all teary when you can’t reciprocate the love.

I do.

Part of my system relies on the fact that I’m a really fast reader. Also, I’m on the computer a lot doing schoolwork and have developed that teen “multi-tasking” habit I used to abhor. I tend to reward myself with reading a certain number of blogs after I’ve accomplished “X.”

I always visit the blog of and leave a comment on the blog of a new visitor at least once. I think that’s common courtesy.

Normally I try to leave short, pithy comments. That helps me comment on more blogs than if I left long comments.

Finally, when it’s really busy I’ll read some blogs in GoogleReader and not comment–I try and alternate who I don’t comment on. GoogleReader helps me so much because I don’t waste my time visiting people who don’t have new posts up.

I respond to reader’s comments only if I really want to have an exchange about that comment.

Thanks for visiting–I hope this helps a bit.

    Two words: Google Reader. :)

I save all my long and windy e-mails for call nights or when I can’t sleep at night. I reply to things (like this) right away after reading them in my feed reader. I get upwards of 500 feeds from all sorts of stuff (comics, photos, etc.) daily so scanning and some days, not reading the feed from the news or dlisted.com, helps.

I try and keep up with my Reader, but it doesn’t always work. If I can’t read every post, I try to comment on everyone’s newest at least. Usually I read/comment during the mornings when I am the only one up, during naptime, and then before bed if I have time. If I get behind, I play catch up on the weekends when I have more free time.

I have no idea how I’m going to keep up once I’m back in class next week, though!

I try and only comment on posts that really speak to me. I know I prefer relevant comments on my post (except, of course, ones that have pictures of my kids where I love a simple “cute”) so I try and do the same to others.

I do try and leave a comment on the blogs of new visitors but just because they visit my blog does not mean I will become a faithful reader. My time is limited so I try and keep my blog reading time devoted to those blogs that I really like reading.

Every now and then I will go on a comment binge and comment on every post in my reader just so that people know I am still reading them even if I don’t comment.

Like others, I only leave comments when I have something to say. I also take the weekends off, everyone needs down time. If your blog is interfering with life (kids, job), you need a break.

Jenn- I see you EVERYWHERE! So you must be able to really multitask! Last night as I was visiting blogs I kept seeing your name. “Uh Oh” I kept thinking, “She’s going to think I’m stalking her!” :)

    Elizabeth- I’m trying!

Beth-I have goggle reader. I helps a little but there’s still the pesky problem of all those gazillion blogs that are so cool!

Kyla- Huh? Try? You are here all the time and you know I love it! Oh please don’t go away….

Awesome- Yep Understand the comment binge. I feel it’s courteous!I’m afraid I’ve been a little rude lately.

Lisa- Er…I just might need as break then. :)

    Hey Doc,

I feel you girl…I also don’t really have the time to visit and comment on everyone. But I still do my best. I’m also guilty of the fact that I don’t return all the link love that I constantly receive.

Like you, I try to spend about 2 hours a day blogging. Maybe someday I’ll have all the time to spend on visiting and commenting.

I think some bloggers have made blogging as their full-time job and if not, their full-time hobby.

    You’re not alone good doctor…

What can I say, I’m a stay at home mom with just one kid who naps a ridiculous amount. I however can’t nap, it’s not in my DNA I guess. The house can only be so clean, so I spend my days doing this!

But I really only read about 15 different blogs regularly. SO it’s not that hard to keep up.

    You’re sweet. :)

There are a few bloggers that I consider as friends. I visit them whenever they post and make a comment.

The others, I try to visit at least once a week. More if I have extra time.

I recently re ordered my reader, putting those I try to keep up with and comment. Another folder of craft stuff, Another of blogs I only read, but don’t comment. I do always try to click through to help out people’s stats. Even so my reader says it has 965 things to read in it since I ignored it over the weekend.

I only have 3 blogs I read regularly (okay, maybe 4 if you count your MD site too…), and only one of those I read religiously! (Yes She, it is yours!) I may peruse some other periodically, but I just can’t commit to reading others much.

You do what you can do when you can do it…

I comment all over the place. It is my way to sit on the couch with my husband and NOT watch the news for hours on end. I have the computer on my lap and I go into the blog world and enjoy.

I don’t have kids, so that is my excuse for having the time. :)

Deep down I probably wish I had hundreds of comments, but mostly I am blogging for me. I like to share myself with my family and friends. I like to document things, too. Blogging is my way of getting it all out into the world. If I get comments it just makes it that much more fun – but I have a blast writing my blog without any reciprocation.

    Hi Dr. Cason,

I try hard to visit all of my friends when they have a new post, but some days exhaustion sets in before I finish the list. Thus, I try a little harder the next day. Soon, I catch up. (I made that sound easier than it is) :)

    Cheers!

Chris- Ahh thanks Chris. That did make me feel a little better.

Nikki- I remember those days! My oldest was a great sleeper too!

Vered- I’m always forgetting someone! Then they come backj adn I’m like Oh No! I haven’t visited in a while. Like White Hot!!

White Hot- Hi!!!!! Just to tell you I really appreciate you! I should do that about the ones I read but don’t comment on too!

    Lance- And repeat and repeat…

Trish- God Bless you. You’ve been saving me for years!

Kristen- I’m on the couch always too! Like right now.

Barbara- You must be really good because your comments are up even in the short time I’ve known you! I tried downloading that little plug in you recommended but it didn’t work. Hmmm I was hoping to shave some time!

  17. Nikkion 20 Aug 2008 at 1:28 am 17

Yes well she is a great sleeper at ALL THE WRONG TIMES! She is STILL eating every two to three hours and so I still am up every two to three hours in the middle of the night. Usually around 3am she decides that it is time to play. fun times! Any pointers on sleeping through the night, or at least more of it?

    Dr. Cason,

I use Google Reader too, which I have set to list view. That way, I can scroll through quickly to see what catches my interest. I read those first and comment from right in reader. I also have a folder of “favorites” and those are what I tend to comment on most.

    Saves lots of time.
