Medicine Mondays #3
Posted by Dr. Cason on Monday, August 25th, 2008
Hi everyone!!
Here’s our third installment of Medicine Mondays!
It’s near the end of my Monday and disease and pestilence still is running amok at the Cason household. My middle girl- sunshine, is still sick so off we trudged to the doctor. Again. Oh and yes I take my child to the doctor.
Thanks to Nikki- We had some good questions regarding Twitching in children and some general pregnancy questions. Here’s a snippet:
Children and Twitching
Question:
My baby does this thing a couple times a day where her left foot twitches, and when I say twitches I mean TWITCHES, it usually only happens if there is a little bit of pressure on it, like if she is pushing on my hands with her feet. What’s that all about?
To read the answer and some more questions Please go to MommyMD.org for the whole post. And thank you Nikki for the questions!! You keep me on my toes.
Please don’t let my brain get all soft and mushy when I’m not at work. Go ahead ask me a few questions. You know I live for this. -Incidently if you want to remain anonymous go ahead and email me at sheila@drcason.org and I’ll post it without mentioning who you are. I gave a shout out to Nikki because she left it in my comments where any old person can peruse!

Ritaon 26 Aug 2008 at 2:36 am 2Dr. Cason,
Though I am far past the point of needing a pediatrician, I wanted to tell you that I SO admire your giving of your time to people with questions. Though I am subscribed to your post, and read it faithfully, I rarely leave a comment. Today, that stops!
Thank you for your posts - and your generosity!

Rita- Your so sweet. I was wondering who my lurkers were. Every day I see more and more people or coming but my comments stay with the same people. It’s nice to hear from you!
Ellen Wilsonon 26 Aug 2008 at 7:18 am 4Hi Dr Cason,
Unrelated question, did you design your header? I like it.
I can’t think of any pediatric questions for today. But now I know where to go when I do! I have a daughter who is eight.
I hope you had a great vacation in Hawaii. I’d love to go sometime. I’d love to live there sometime! At least for a few months. Or years.

Kat Stephensonon 26 Aug 2008 at 1:08 pm 5Sheila - Sure hope you and your family are feeling much better soon. Moonbeam’s Mom told me you had also been ill. Such are the joys of having small children - they get sick and then you do. Of course, being around sick children all the time you do not stand a chance of missing all the pesty illnesses going around.
Saying a prayer for good health and many blessings for you and yours. Take care of yourself please and get some rest to bounce back.

Kat- Hi welcome back! We’ll all be better with a little rest and plenty of fluids. But then again who wouldn’t!
Sara Rosson 26 Aug 2008 at 10:25 pm 7I missed medicine mondays this week. I kept meaning to write in, but was distracted by something throughout the weekend. So, here are some questions for next week
1. Should bug spray be used on kids anytime they go outside?
A case of West Nile Virus was found in a dead bird in our neighborhood. A bit crazy!
2. For toddlers, is there a given amount of fatty acids they should have for good brain development? Are supplements available and ever necessary?
With my daughters dairy, egg, and nut allergies, the fatty acids she can intake are limited. She eats a lot of avocados. What are other good sources?
3. Do most kids regress with potty training after going for months?
My son tells us that he doesn’t have to go pee when he clearly does. Is this a power struggle?
Ok, have a good week everyone.
Ritaon 27 Aug 2008 at 12:35 am 8Dr. Cason,
I am not only a lurker, but a devoted subscriber. Yours is the ONLY blog to which I subscribe where I rarely leave comments - for one reason only: I don’t want to take your time in feeling that you need to respond, especially since there are SO MANY people who require your advice!
So, from now on, I will leave an occasional comment. But please, particularly in your case, rest assured that I WILL return if you do not respond.
Best to you,
Rita

Melissa Lagerquiston 27 Aug 2008 at 6:58 am 9Ugh! The post-partum shedding! I’m going through that right now. It seems like it’s never going to end.
Question: A friend’s child just had her 2 year check up at Kaiser and had blood work done showing her child’s iron levels were low. She was told to begin giving her daughter children’s vitamins with iron. However, Asher didn’t have this blood work done when he had his 2 year appointment at your old office. What is your opinion on vitamin supplements for toddlers? Asher’s a pretty good eater, though he’s not a big fan of meat. I can usually get a veggie or two in him, but his favorites are fruit, yogurt, and oatmeal.
Hope you’re feeling better!

Sara Rosson 27 Aug 2008 at 9:38 am 10Ok, I have a fe more for Medicine Mondays
1. Part B of previous question. What are symptoms of WNV?
2. How should I disipline my 15 month old as far as hitting other kids at school is concerned? Was told she had some alone time today because he hid another toddler and pulled her off a toy outside, (of course it is the teachers kid!)
She has an older brother that is a bit pushy and I think she is projecting on other kids.
Thanks.
Oh, Melissa, read last Weeks Medicine Monday on anemia. Dr. C put a link to iron enriched foods instead of iron drops, I think.
tiffon 27 Aug 2008 at 1:26 pm 11Hi Dr Cason,
I hope your little one feels better soon.
I have a question for you.
Ivy has a petichial rash (we are in the hospital) and it is not meningococcal. Wondering what else it could be, right now. It is in her hairline, some on her face, on her arms, hands and on her feet. I guess the other thing is she is septic, so wondering if this could be related.
Another question… I have been trying to word this properly but can’t seem to get it right, so hope you understand me. If Ivy has no pneumococcal antibodies to speak of, would that make a blood test looking for strep markers null and void?
Thanks for medicine Mondays, it is very interesting!
