Boats in Bali

Posted by on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

One of my favorite things about my recent trip to Bali was the fishing boats. They were so unique that when we walked through a narrow corridor between houses and popped up on the beach I thought we’d stopped back in time.

No kidding- Have you seen anything cooler?

I’m not a boat person – but I am totally in love with beauty. What a beautiful sight.

Cool pictures! I bet if you investigated the designs carefully, you would find a history of folklore and maybe some special good luck charms of their culture associated with these different designs.

I cannot help but think that last one is an example of this.

Sheila – I bet Jakey would really like that last boat picture for his room. I think you should blow it up and frame for his room.

They have those same boats in the Philippines too. Two years ago, we took a two hour boat ride to an island and man it was quite an adventure.

Excuse this third post, but I had to share this with everyone. I found this great website telling about the history and cultures of these boats which they call “jukungs” and are modeled after their Balinese Hindu culture. Hope you enjoy this as I did reading it. Sheila, you spurred me to learn something new today – thanks!

“The jutting bow is decorated with an image of the mythical Gajah Mina (elephant fish) with its fierce bulging eyes to ward off evil.” – I believe this is the boat in the last picture, what do you think Sheila?

I see so many similarities between you and someone else I know Sheila. She is always fascinated, as you seem to be, with things of a spiritual nature.

I love being able to take a trip without leaving my couch. Very convenient.
