Our Birthday Cake Alternative
Posted by Dr. Cason on Monday, September 15th, 2008
12 years ago today I met my husband. It was his birthday and the entire 1st year medical class was invited to his birthday party. I had nothing better to do and decided to go.
Now 12 years later it’s decidedly different birthday celebration.
Instead of beer and pizza it was meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
Instead of a bakery birthday cake (made with all the terribly allergy provoking ingredients of milk and eggs) we made an ice cream cake fashioned out of soy ice cream sandwiches and Oreo cookies.
It was actually pretty good and the kids dug into it!
Birthday Guy even had seconds.
Life is good.
Happy Birthday Honey

Nikkion 15 Sep 2008 at 9:03 pm 1I’m sure one can get used to soy products but not me! YUCK! In my life right before Danger I managed a Starbucks and let me tell you, steaming soy sucks! AND it smells bad, and also it tastes like rotten chopsticks! About a year and a bit ago I tried my damnedest to go Vegan, but I just couldn’t do Soy and I LOVE milk and all it’s glorious products! Every day I bury my conscience in Organic chocolate milk, yogurt, cheese and a slab of meat from some ethically grown animal and boy does it taste good. So even if it is allergy induced good for you and your soy.

Kathleenon 16 Sep 2008 at 1:39 am 3Oh Happy Birthday Daddy, and aren’t you glad you went to that birthday party Sheila? Destiny was calling, and you answered its call that night….
Have a blessed and wonderful day all of you.
Lisaon 16 Sep 2008 at 1:57 am 4Well I told you about my attempt at no milk (in case you forgot, miserable). I prefer rice or almond milk to soy.
One of our oncall MDs is an allergist. She wants me to come see her about my food issues. Here’s hoping I figure it out.
Happy B-day out there husband guy!

Marnon 16 Sep 2008 at 2:19 am 5Hey She - Now that Nabisco is making peanut butter oreos, I can’t get a committment from them that regular Oreos are safe. It’s been a sad truth in our household for a while. Unfortunately, Jack remembers when he could eat them and how good they taste.
kcinnovaon 16 Sep 2008 at 5:16 am 6I remember the allergy days and the fun of finding new foods to eat. That looks like a pretty good cake!

Kathleenon 16 Sep 2008 at 5:27 am 7FYI - For those highly allergic to peanut butter (as my godchild is), be sure and note the message at Krystal’s now about the peanut butter warning. They had shakes with peanut butter in them, and now they are warning those with allergies to beware because of the possibility of cross-contamination within their equipment.

Dr. Casonon 16 Sep 2008 at 12:57 pm 9Nikki- I have been drinking soy milk in my coffee but I actually like the rice milk better. And if he wasn’t allergic I’d be digging into regular milk as well!
Lance- Thanks- Some days it feels like a long time and other days it feels really short!
Kathleen- It was truly love at first sight- at least for me
and yes I’m glad I went!
Lisa- Let me know what happens. Allergy is such a growing field intriguing and yet frustrating at the same time. It just depends on which side you are on!
Marn- *sob* *sob* I didn’t realize that and now have to make that decision whether to not give those to him!
Moon Mom- Thanks! I’ll let him know!
Kcinnova- It was fun getting it all ready and he was really surprised!
Kathleen- Thanks for the tip- is Krystals a Southern chain? I’ve never heard of them.
Evelyn- It was!
Trishon 16 Sep 2008 at 3:21 pm 10How creative we have to get!! Good thing you are creative now isn’t it!!
Love love love your photos!

Kathleenon 16 Sep 2008 at 7:20 pm 11SHEILA - Krystal’s hamburgers must be a Southern chain then. I never realized they were not everywhere. They have been around ever since I was a small child, and at 56 years that was a while ago.
They are famous for these small burgers with little buns (more like those soft dinner rolls) and come with lots of minced cooked onions, a thin beef patty, mustard and a pickle on them. They are delicious but only a couple of mouthfuls at a time since they are small, and the bun is nice and soft and steamed warm.
Now they have many other alternatives, even a small pronto pup. They were my grandmother’s favorite little burgers - I used to go by and pick some up for her and take them by her house as she got older. She always had a big smile when I brought them to her with some fries and a shake.
For a look at these little burgers, check out this website. I just saw where they will be coming to San Antonio, TX soon, and have been in business since 1932 - wow, 20 years before I was born! Goodness are they old like me!!!!!

chrison 17 Sep 2008 at 4:59 am 12Now that’s a cake! Life is always good when you can look at the person you promised to spend your entire life with and still be able to feel the same feeling you had the very first time you held hands.
Nikkion 17 Sep 2008 at 7:22 am 13Happy birthday to your hubby too…
Annie Andersonon 17 Sep 2008 at 11:00 am 14Yum! That looks so good. I might have to steal that idea for our next birthday around here. With 6 people, 7 including grandma, cake gets old sometimes.
But I love it anyway.
@Nikki - Have you ever tried hemp milk? I don’t like soy much either but we have dairy allergies at our house so I’ve tried nearly every kind of milk alternative there is and hemp milk is really yummy. It’s kinda creamy and a little nutty flavored. The *best* brand out there is one called Living Harvest, produced in Canada (as most are) and comes in 3 flavors - plain, vanilla and chocolate. I use the vanilla for everything.
