Happy Birthday to My Twin
Posted by Dr. Cason on Saturday, September 27th, 2008
It’s my Twin’s birthday today. Mine was yesterday.
Being in Guam means that for the first time in our lives we celebrate our birthdays on separate days. Or maybe I should just think that we celebrate it twice.
I always knew I was a twin and proud of it. We don’t look so much alike as we used to.We’re told we’re identical but I wonder…
She’s in my soul. Always. Sometimes when I get really Shirley McClaine about it – remember I’m from California
- I start to wonder how we were related in another life.
Was I her mom, sister, daughter, best friend?
Because it’s inconceivable to think that I was never ever connected to her before.
I know I was and always will be. So even though I’m a world apart and it’s been over a year since I’ve seen her, she’s in my heart.
Happy Birthday Buglet- Here’s some of my favorite memories- ( Oh just as a note. I often can’t remember whether something happened to me or her. But it doesn’t matter. )
- Exploring Anderson by foot. Catching an occasional movie. Throwing rocks and breaking that side window. ?You or me?
- Dancing to “Jack and Diane” before school. ” Oh Yeah life goes on…”
- Traipsing around the ravine behind our house in Lake California. Tiny little frogs jumping out of the almost dried up pond.
- Long walks down to the lake. Dry hot summer days.
- The daily commutes to Shasta College. I always drove. Singing at the top of our lungs-“Here come old flattop, he come grooving up slowly. He got joo-joo eyeball, he one holy roller..
- Jumping into bed. “You turn off the light.” “No you!” “You were just up!” ” I’m not now!”
- Crashing on the steepest scariest hill of my life. Blood was everywhere. And you ran down to get a bandaid.
- Standing at the Norfolk airport, watching you walk away with my baby nephew. I bawled.
- Dancing at Bobby McGee’s. No one else gets the love of dancing as you and me together.
- Making fake little bird’s nest out of the freshly mowed grass in Pennsylvania. Blowing shiny pinwheels with Mags.
- Switching places in High School. They all knew.
- Potatoe chips and Ice cream.
- Laughing to “Terms of Endearment”, Remember these lines “Give my Daughter the shot!” “Pull away slowly,” “I mean really Flap let’s be honest before we start kidding ourselves.” “I think I might be pregnant”
- Your favorite chocolate chip recipe. I miss those.
- Playing the card game Speed over and over.
- Anxiously waiting for kindergarten recess. We could see each other again. Finally
- That Black and White photo of us coloring. We are facing each other sitting in W formation with our heads almost touching.
- Changing that flat tire in Lake California. The old man with his dog stood there and made conversation as we struggled with the lug nuts.
- Watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” year after year. Zuzu’s petals!
- Studying together. We were better together. At least I was.
Our kindergarten pictures sit on my nightstand. It used to be in the bathroom. It looks older than it is because Sunshine Girl thought it needed a bath. It quickly found a new home. It’s stood the test of time.
Hmm that looks a little too old!
Here’s what it really looks like:

Nikkion 27 Sep 2008 at 7:26 pm 1And this right here is why the husband and I want to have another as soon as humanly possible. My closest sibling is 10 years younger than I and is only actually a half brother who I didn’t live with until he came to stay with us last year. Growing up I always wished for a brother or sister to play with.
You are a very lucky lady!!

Kathleenon 28 Sep 2008 at 1:04 am 3How much fun it must be to have a sister, and nonetheless an identical twin sister. Happy, happy birthday to you both!
I always wanted a sister, but unfortunately never had one until meeting my dearest and closest friend, Ann. Ann understands me and is always there for me just like a sister. So glad we met in that ice rink when her daughter and my son were learning to ice skate. Too many people are too eager to give up a close friend – not me, I will be hanging onto Ann and treating her like the “24-karat gold friend and adoptive sister she is!”

Kristinon 28 Sep 2008 at 6:14 am 4I just recently said goodbye to my sister at an airport- – she was carrying my 5 month old niece – I cried so hard I didn’t think they’d let me on the plane.
I think that is the coolest thing ever – to have your birthdays on separate days for the first time.
I Loved your list – thanks so much.

By the way, have you seen Lucy Gibney’s allergen-free cookies? See drlucys.com – she went to EVMS with me. She has quit practicing completely to devote her time to creating these ‘Smart Cookies’.
Love to you, and your family.

Hugs,

Marnon 29 Sep 2008 at 5:47 am 10Wow. I cried like crazy on that.
Of course, for our birthday, I went dancing and had very little to drink – just like at bobby mcgees all those years ago when all we would do was drink water and go crazy. And nobody could understand it.
Thank you for the walk down memory lane. I loved it.
Are you sure you were the only one driving to shasta college?
Talenaon 29 Sep 2008 at 9:16 pm 11HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU BOTH…I know how you feel about that. My twin is in WA state and I get to be more than 20 minutes older now. Now I am a day older. Walks down memory lane keep us young in mild, spirit and heart.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK.
