He’s Anemic

He’s anemic.
And not just a little but a lot.
I started crying when I found out- No surprise there!
You know what that means right?
It means I’m not crazy.
It means he is pale.
And I can treat it.
Oh happy days…

Marnon 01 Oct 2008 at 11:56 pm 4Well geez - thank god. i feel like finally the universe gave us a break. Anemia - low iron right? iron supplements? how long to take effect? what are the long lasting effects of anemia? i mean, can everyone just wander around with it? or do they get sick - like for instance, get pneumnoia …
Kathleenon 02 Oct 2008 at 12:20 am 5SHEILA - I am so happy you are finding this out. I was also very anemic as a child and most of my adult life. I was even hospitalized for it. You will never believe this, and I doubt they would consider this now with salmonella, but the doctors had my grandmother preparing egg milks several times a day for me to drink. She would mix “raw egg,” milk, sugar, and vanilla and I would drink this. It is a wonder I did not die from salmonella I guess.
I did not really know the cause of this anemia until after both my children had been born. When it was necessary to have a hysterectomy, my OB/GYN found I had the worse case of endometriosis he had ever seen. No one had ever realized this. The even odder thing is I did not seem to hurt with it, nor did I have trouble conceiving my two sons - in fact, right the opposite. He was truly amazed - but not me, I knew God had put those two precious sons in my future and anything is possible with God’s help.
Do they have any idea what is causing the anemia by chance?

Dr. Casonon 02 Oct 2008 at 8:15 am 7Kyla- Yeah!!
Awesome- Me too!
Nikki- I watched him a long time last night and thought the same thing.
Marn- The question is why he has such low iron- Is it that he’s not taking enough in or losing blood or not utilizing it. We’re supplementing - today was the second dose and we shouldn’t really see an increase for a month or two. We changed his antibiotics to something stronger and we’ll cont it for 3 weeks. We still need to recheck his immunoglobulins and see ENT for the sinus infections. Chronic low iton can lead to all sorts of problems. I will create a post for Medicine Mondays on it this week!
Kathleen- Wow- you are lucky with the salmonella bit! You are here for a reason Kathleen. We’re going to keep you around for a long time!

Sara Rosson 02 Oct 2008 at 9:43 am 8Hi Sheila-
It has been crazy around my house lately. Sorry to hear you have been in a rough patch, but super glad to hear, that Jakey’s diagnosis is treatable.
It is nice to know someone got good new with everything that is going on in the world.
My company just laid off 5% of our workforce, luckily I wasn’t one of them.
On a happier note, last night we were with a bunch of family and my son loves signing “You raise me up” at the top of his lungs. He wanted to sing it for everyone and did a great job - 3.5 today. I was watching him and wanted to cry because I was just so happy for him. He was so innocent in that moment. It was a great mommy moment.
Again, I am happy for you and the family.
Lisaon 02 Oct 2008 at 10:47 am 9I’m just going to focus on the treatable part. That’s a relief. Last night I went to work and my patient was just about to start their bone marrow transplant regimine and they found out he relapsed. Treatment options are slipping away. It makes me sad for them.

Kathleenon 02 Oct 2008 at 12:10 pm 10SHEILA - That is such a sweet thing to say. I fully intend on staying around here as long as God will allow. I have four little ones and another on the way to help raise and love, needless to say my children and new daughters to enjoy as well. I was lucky - Tommy picked Selena, a beautiful artist (I love art and always have), and Nicholas picked Mikayla, a beautiful musician (and music is my other great love). Now wasn’t that nice of them to pick such daughters for me?
It has been a pleasure meeting so many people through the internet and blog with similar interests - and definitely you are one of these. I sure hope some day you come to Memphis for a delightful seminar at St. Jude and we meet. My doors are open to anyone who wishes to visit. I love company.

Trishon 02 Oct 2008 at 3:16 pm 11So it is an iron deficiency anemia? Not an immune mediated hemolytic anemia? Is he just anemic and not thrombocytopenic? You have mentioned a possible auto immune issue with him so I was just inquiring. And NOT to compare Jake to dogs, but we see IMHA in dogs a lot in our practice, so when you said anemic, that was where I went…
If it is an iron deficiency anemia, is is because he is so restricted on so many foods?
And finally
KEEP WORKING YOUR INSTINCTS!! THEY ARE RIGHT ON!!!!!! I don’t care if you have to place an order off the menu, DO IT, INSIST on it and don’t take NO for an answer!!

Cassaundraon 05 Oct 2008 at 5:39 am 15Sheila,
I know you probably think I am cRaZy……but MY opinion, with what you have been through with Jake, you need to completely treat him with all the herbs to eliminate any and all parasites from Jake’s little body. SO many of his symptoms indicate to me he has parasites……..antibiotics are not going to to the trick. Again, my opinion, it can take up to 2 rounds of “para-gone” or “paracleanse” to rid him of them if that is what is ailing him. Please consider doing this. Others I know with similar problems have tried it and low and behold they are all well now……it is truly amazing. Read “Guess What Came To Dinner” and the “Parasite Menace” and you will completely understand. Our bodies are made too perfectly to just fall apart. I feel your pain…..I have been there.
