A Doctor’s Life - It’s Not Just About Medicine

A Twelve Minute Mile

Posted by Dr. Cason on Saturday, October 11th, 2008

It’s 8:30 am here in Guam and Saturday morning. Clinic will begin soon.

I’ve been up for hours. I snuck out early this morning at O dark thirty and made my way down for a 5 K run. It’s my second one I’ve ever run but I’m still working at being in shape. At 5′8″ 130 lbs I look thin and in shape but health is deceiving. As long as your skin is glowing, you look pretty good - - never mind that your lungs are wheezing and your heart is beating out of your chest.

I ran a 12 minute mile.

I’m pretty sure I could walk faster than that.

But I did it. I didn’t stop and I felt pretty good. I never felt like I couldn’t do it though I was wondering where the finish line was. A guy next to me said, “Oh didn’t they tell you? There isn’t one.”

I nearly believed him then he cracked up.

It was easier than I thought it would be. Granted I went at a nice, compeletely doable, turtle pace but I always run slow. And never make it past 10 or 15 minutes before I want to stop. But today was different.

The energy was infectious.

The crowd was pretty big- we were all running to benefit some elementary schools and there were tons of kids. They were running fast. And stopping pretty fast too.

The rain sprinkled down the whole time. The sun never came out. I held my sunglasses in my right hand.

Two watering spots gave me the opportunity to learn to run and coordinate drinking. I need more practice. I spilled It all over my face and I felt guilty dropping the cup to the ground. (I actually cringed)

Favorite moment- The man running next to me with a t-shirt saying “God is Everywhere”.

    Hi Sheila-
Congrats on the 5K. I know waht you mean about “being in shape, but not really being in shape”. I’m 5′5 and a bit over 100 lbs, but I couldn’t run a 5K right now to save my life. My heart would be jumping out of my chest.

We will have to wait and see if the run bug hits you. My husband started running this Spring and is now addicted. He has completed 2 5K, 2 Sprint triathalons and 1 Olympic triathalon. He is now registers for 2 Halfs and 1 Full Ironman next year!

    Have a good Saturday.

You inspire me. A few years ago while in college, I started a walking program around and around the track by the field house between a couple of my classes. With my RA, running or jogging is a real no-no for my bad joints, but walking (unless in a flare-up) is okay.

I have never felt as good as I did then, and I lost weight without any trying. Time to sign up for a couple of classes and get to walking around that track again. Thanks for the idea.

    Way to go Sheila!

Good for you! I am rather fond of the “Don’t run unless someone is chasing you.” rule myself. ;)

congrats on the 5k… I did one of those once… I’m a 15 minute miler myself!!! In all my training for the (one) marathon I did, I NEVER did master running and drinking at the same time…. so good luck with that one!!

I am so happy for you, but I have to say - i burst into tears when I read that last line. Guess I needed to hear it to have reacted so strongly.

    Thanks, Thanks so much,
    Kristin

I am pretty fit, I spend about an hour on the elliptical 4 or 5 times a week, but seriously I can run for approx. 30 seconds before I almost die! Completely incapable!

Congrats on the run! I’ll be surprised if you don’t become addicted to 5k’s. Pretty soon a 5k will seem passe!
I’m a lousy one to talk right now tho… I ran this morning for the first time in nearly a month (and just 3 months since my knee surgery) and it was brutal. *sigh*
