What Color are Your Eyes?
Posted by Dr. Cason on Tuesday, November 4th, 2008
Thanks Nikki for giving me today’s Medicine Mondays at MommyMd.org! I wish I could have given you a straight answer regarding Danger’s eyes, but we now know that eye color is from complex inheritance patterns and does not follow the simple Mendelian Patterns of inheritance that we all remember from high school.
It was exciting to do some of the research. I let the dishes sit and went exploring on the internet. I’ve always really liked genetics. It’s one of the main reasons why I chose pediatrics. It’s an opportunity to get at the beginning stages of a diagnosis. Frustrating but pretty cool.
Now here’s you chance to tell me something…
What color are your eyes?
Mine are green.

Kathleenon 04 Nov 2008 at 2:05 am 1Mine are a very, very dark brown, as are my oldest son’s eyes. Tommy takes after the Stark side of the family, and Nick takes after his father’s side of the family. My biological father had these very, very dark brown eyes just like mine.
Kylaon 04 Nov 2008 at 2:31 am 2Mine are a grayish blue.
I, too, love the research, especially genetics.
kcinnovaon 04 Nov 2008 at 3:59 am 3Mine are blue that have changed to a blue-green over time, just like my mother’s eyes. My sis has blue eyes, too; my dad & 2 brothers have brown eyes. I always thought that was interested: blue eyed females and brown eyed males. I adore my niece’s big brown eyes.
I married a blue-eyed man …really, they are denim blue. *sigh*
All 4 of ours have varying shades of blue. The oldest boy has blue-gray eyes.

Melissa Lagerquiston 04 Nov 2008 at 4:17 am 4I once worked with a woman with dark brown eyes who began discussing the eye colors of her children. I had to stop her when she mentioned both HER parents had blue eyes! I know eye color doesn’t follow simple patterns of inheritance, but as far as I know, two blues can’t make brown. I think that family might have a few secrets!
Our 7 month old’s eyes still don’t seem to have settled on a color. They are an odd dark blue/green. I hoping they go green like mine and not brown like my husband. He’s already the spitting image of his daddy, I’d like to see myself somewhere in him!
Dawnon 04 Nov 2008 at 6:38 am 5My eyes are hazel. It’s a funny eye color – I call them “mood” eyes. When I cry they turn green. Most of the time they’re a mix between green & brown. Sometimes they look more brown than green. Weird!
Lisaon 04 Nov 2008 at 8:16 am 6Brown. And I love that my girls got them instead of blue ones.

Awesome Momon 04 Nov 2008 at 8:23 am 7Mine are dark brown and my husband has dark hazel eyes. Harry has strange eyes, they are blue gray around the edges and hazel in the middle.
myston 04 Nov 2008 at 8:44 am 8Mine are blue,
my husbands are green.
Both of our boys were blue eyed until Z17 turned 12 or 13 – then his went green (took me by surprise!). They can be green, grey green or blue green depending on his mood!
Small Mans are still blue – he’s almost 14 – so I’m guessing he’ll stay blue.

Lauraon 04 Nov 2008 at 8:48 am 9I have steel-blue eyes…
….as do 5 of our six children.
The other one got his dad’s hazel eyes (which I LOVE!)…they change from blue to green, depending on what color he is wearing.

Marelisaon 04 Nov 2008 at 11:26 am 10My eyes are very dark brown. Here in Panama someone found a way to change people’s eye color (he was studying albinos, there’s an Indian tribe here –the Kuna–that has a very high incidence of albinos, and he found how to change their eye color).

Suzanneon 04 Nov 2008 at 11:56 am 12Mine are a strange combo of brown and green, with dark blue around the edges, but I’m not sure they qualify as hazel. My dad’s are blue and my mom’s are similar to mine. Can’t figure it out!
Sara Rosson 04 Nov 2008 at 12:28 pm 13I;m with Dawn- mine are hazel. My husbands are dark brown, my daughters are blue and my sons are hazel.
My son also has a birthmark in his eye- never seen this before. I forget what the opthamalogist calls it, something to do with loss of pigment.
He thinks he is very cool- which is great!
Something else I find fascinating is handedness. My husband and I are both lefthanded. We were sure our kids would be too. My son is righthanded and my daughter is still a question – mixes it up with left and right. Seems mostly right. Weird to me.
tiffon 04 Nov 2008 at 2:35 pm 14Blue. Mine are blue. All of the kids have blue eyes. David’s are blue too.
What about hair colouring? I find that interesting too.
Kristinon 05 Nov 2008 at 9:47 am 15Mine are brown. A lovely brown, but brown. My Dad has bright beautiful blue eyes and my Mom has brown. My sister and her husband both have brown eyes and their first child was born with blue. The same bright beautiful blue eyes as my Dad’s (her grandfather) — So two browns can make a blue! It’s all in the genetics.

Sarah R.on 05 Nov 2008 at 3:35 pm 16I’m same as Suzanne. I’ve always struggled with what to call them. My husband and both daughters are blue, but the 3 year old looks less blue – she may be heading toward more like mine.
As far as the handedness, I did a paper on this in college. Lefties are 10% of the general population, but 20% of the populations at both ends of the IQ spectrum. When both parents are lefties, there is a higher chance of their child being left-handed, but still only 40%.
