I Love a Good Drive
Posted by Dr. Cason on Wednesday, November 12th, 2008
I long to get in the car and just drive and drive. I’d roll down the windows and suffer the knotty consequences later. I’d turn the music up high and start to dream of what little roadside cafe should be my stop for lunch or for that matter dinner.
If you want to come along then come. We’ll talk of life and read each other stories or maybe not talk at all. We’ll just watch the highway stretch out in front. And be grateful for the company.

1. On Guam they don’t call that driving, they call that laps.
2. No such luck driving in comfortable silence in my ride. I get off the gravel road to my house and down the main road a piece and the little woman asks, “Can I tell you about the dream I had last night?’’ Now, one would think I could daydream through her dream, right? WRONG. At the end of a VERY, very long dream story I get asked, “What do think my subconscious mind is trying to tell me in my dream?” Rear-view-me buddy, I better have a good answer handy. If I don’t, it could 150 degrees outside but inside the truck I might as well be driving in Fairbanks, Alaska in January. Comfortable silence, that’s why I read you, you always give me peaceful images.

Kathleenon 13 Nov 2008 at 5:23 am 2I used to drive long distances until my knees got so bad with the arthritis. I miss it SO much.
My most fun drive was going to see my son (Eastern New Mexico University) in Portales, NM, all the way from Memphis, TN. About 12-13 hours driving fast. I left after my class that night at Univ of Memphis (about 7:30-8:00 pm) and drove and drove.
I had a wonderful little red Pontiac Sunfire (Limited Edition Sight and Sound with a great sound system in it). I put on beautiful music and opened the sunroof to keep me wide awake. I went through Little Rock, AR; Fort Smith, AR (saw a beautiful deer on the side of the mountain there); and almost to Oklahoma City when I decided I was
“sleepy – finally.”
Only problem, no available hotel room to be found. So I pulled into a restaurant where the truckers went (my grandfather always said this was the best food and the safest at night with their loaded guns and dogs). I talked to the nicest trucker, and he convinced me I could sleep in my car by the truckers. Told me to pull in front of his truck, and any problems hit the horn. He and his dog would come running. So I did.
I have never slept so good. The boys still tease me about “the time I slept with the truckers – hee, hee).” Next morning, had breakfast and talked to the same trucker, went in the bathroom and cleaned up a bit, and off I went to New Mexico. It was a wonderful trip! I will never forget what a great time I had “driving the road in my little Sunfire listening to great music!”

Lisaon 13 Nov 2008 at 3:09 pm 4I love the drive, with music or This American Life or just my thoughts. It’s the only place that gives me real perspective. That or running. I feel like I can figure out all of the answers because I am in motion.
