One Day, I’m Going to Miss the Banana Trees

Posted by on Thursday, November 20th, 2008

One day I’ll look back and say, “I lived on a tropical island!” and be so grateful for all the different experiences that we were afforded.

So just when I feel like complaining that there isn’t a Borders or Barnes and Noble to hunker down in and drink my steamy cup of coffee, I think about the banana trees.- Or I just remind myself that ineveitably I’d be stuck in the back with the trainset while craving to sit crosslegged in the cookbook aisle, where I could glance up and try to decide which I should I read first: Breads Breads Breads or Cooking with Paula?

But for now I enjoy the banana trees. When we first moved here I ran outside and marveled. “Oh my Goodness, we grow bananas in our backyard! The smallest sweetest cutest little bananas. They make the ones from the grocery store taste bland in comparison.

My kids take it for granted, but not I.

When I start thinking, “Boy do I miss In and Out Burgers.” I follow it up by, “But we have a Banana Tree on our backyeard.”

Banana Flower

“Boy, do I miss the snow.” …But we have a Banana Tree on our backyard.

Banana Tree with Flower

“Boy, do I miss my family”…But we have a Banana Tree on our backyard.

Close Up Banana Flower

Okay maybe that last one doesn’t work as well. But one day I’ll be sitting on the couch watching all the cousins play together and my niece or nephew will start eating a banana and I’ll think “Boy, do I miss those bananas!”

For you all-

  • What do you miss about where you used to live?
  • What do you appreciate about where you live now?

    Wow!

    That’s an awesome tree!

    Hmmm…..

I miss that there aren’t kids close by to do the riding bikes and hanging out thing – but then maybe that’s good in some ways.

I appreciate the peace and lack of really close/sticky beaking neighbours where we live now, and the space!

I’m going home next week, so this is really timely. I miss Michigan & my sisters, my nieces, my Mom and Dad. I miss the small(ish) town, knowing every single road in town, my favorite grocery store, winter nights that just glow with light from the moon reflecting off the snow, sitting in my mothers backyard laughing with my sisters. I miss being home that’s for sure.

Winters are just so hard on my skin so I moved to Florida where physically I feel so much better. I love the palm trees and the rain storms in the afternoon (if I’m not driving!) and that I only have to have one wardrobe of clothing – I just toss on a jacket if I’m chilly. I don’t need to have a whole winter wardrobe and a whole summer wardrobe. I do not miss driving in snow or freezing rain. I will probably never experience those driving conditions here in Florida and for that I’m forver thankful.

I miss: the warmer weather during the winter, Costco, and right now I am really missing the Outlet Motherhood Maternity store that was near me. I really need some warm maternity shirts.

I appreciate: Having a zoo close enough that we can go often, the much friendlier people and having my own home with a nice sized back yard.

    Great photos…
I miss living on a dirt road up the street from the lake… And I miss having a big huge yard for my dog to run in and my girl to play in…

I appreciate living close to my job, and snow plowing, and my deck, and living right above the rushing river :)

Since I have lived in Memphis ALL MY LIFE, I don’t know what I miss about Memphis. But I do know what I miss about my old home I grew up in – I miss the beautiful hardwood floors, I miss the the backyard where I would play for hours with our rescue doggies, I miss spending time with my great-grandparents who lived next door, but most of all I miss the two people I loved so dearly who were always there in that home – my grandparents. This was HOME because they were there. My present home will never really be HOME without them.

Sheila – Check out the snow photo on my blog. A friend up North sent to me to tease me – she knows I love the snow.

I was born in Alaska, but we moved here when I was four. I miss the snow! It has only snowed here once since we’ve had kids and they will probably be in their teens by the next snow!

    I like bananas!

I miss my friend, Anita. She is zany and care free and I miss her everyday. I also miss the shopping and at this time of year I miss the Christmas light displays.

Where we are now; I love that our home overlooks the mountains.

I miss knowing something would be open fairly well regardless of what time I thought I had a need. I miss being only a few minutes from good friends.

I love living in the “woods” and the fact that the dogs think we moved to the park. As annoying as the deer may be, I love the little herd that likes to hang out in my yard. I love the huge amount of space that we now have.

Great post… seriously my wife and I think and say this kind of stuff all the time. We’ve been away from home for about 4 years now. We both grew up in the same town and even started dating in highschool. Both her family and mine are all still there and it’s the absence from family that is the hardest thing for us. We both come from large and wonderful homes. Kim is the oldest of 4 girls, I’m the youngest of 5. I also miss a little place in Bountiful called Paces Dairy Ann. The nastiest looking burger joint that has been around for 40 years. But their burgers are to die for!
I love the weather in California. We live in the San Francisco Bay Area and it really is beautiful. I also love the many ethnicitys and different cultures here as well. The diversity is what I love about where we live now. My wife and I go back and forth. She always is saying, “Honey we could buy a house back home for $180,000!!!” I love California right now, eventually it’s my goal to raise my my kids around our family.

    Great pics too-

This is why I live in my hometown . . . although I do miss it when away – and especially in college, I missed the water, the green, and yes, the RAIN.

    I love this post!

I hear that bananas are going extinct. Everything is, actually.

What I miss most about home in the snow. What I appreciate most about here is the lack thereof, oy vey.

I miss the horses on my family’s farm back in Idaho, though I hear that it is now a subdivision. I miss the places of my childhood that are too far away to go visit often. I miss the mountains from Salt Lake City, and I’ve learned that I have absolutely no sense of direction without them. The thing I appreciate the most about Minneapolis is the people. This is by far the friendliest place I’ve ever lived. Also, it’s nice to live in a “blue” state for the first time in my life :-) . If only I could do something about the subzero winter temperatures!!… Oh well, I suppose you can’t have it all.

The hubs and I moved across the country a year after we got married. I had a really hard time with it at first but we have lived in 3 cities in 3 years so I have become pretty flexible. I love where we live now, small town, with a mountain view AND a Starbucks, however I would pick up and move to a place like guam at the drop of a hat. A banana tree sounds magical!

Oh wow!! The picture of your banana tree looks awesome!

Well, you can’t have all the comforts that come from city life, while living in a tropical more relaxed island! It’s great that your family gets a breath of experience.

Wow, wonderful banana trees. You will sure miss those if you leave there.
It’s not the banana trees I miss most from where I used to live but the sea, the weather and the peaceful and relaxed way of life, I guess. Living outdoors mostly and meeting friends out on the streets, etc. etc. etc. Funny how you appreciate such kind of things much more when living elsewhere.
All I can say to you is enjoy the time in that tropical place as much as you can!
Mmmm and what do I appreciate most where I live now, well the seasons I guess but still I don’t like snow! well not like is a big word. I like to see it from behind the window but if you have to go through I hate it. It also makes me worried about the rest of the family getting home safe and sound. Due to the weather already several people died in the past weekend. The worst is a mum, dad and daughter of a family. An 11 year old son is critically injured and is in hospital.

it’s so funny…I had many of your same thoughts and I too have taken many, many, many pictures of the banana trees that grow in our yard…we made our holiday banana bread with the bananas we grew in our own back yard…how cool is that!!!! it is something I will miss someday and I don’t take for granted.

I have fond memories from my time living in Iceland…the fish market in Keflavik…I could buy FRESH salmon whenever I wanted and loved searching for new recipes to prepare it…I miss living on base and having themed dinner parties and the feeling of closeness with my friends there…I miss the long, long days of “summer” there…I miss Iceland and love being able to say “I used to live in Iceland”.
